Prospective Students
As
a student considering a major in the College of Natural Sciences,
it is important that you understand the expectations that we have
for you as a student, in the same way that we hope to learn about
your expectations of us when you arrive. It is important that you
quickly develop an understanding of the academic expectations of
the faculty and your responsibilities in the learning process. In
a typical course, your instructor will organize a reasonable amount
of material and suggest thought processes and strategies for you
to use in learning the subject. Your instructor will model learning,
critical thinking, analytical reasoning, curiosity, and imagination
in presenting course material. The curriculum will encourage your
intellectual and hands-on involvement. Your responsibility is to
truly master the material in a way that has exercised and expanded
your mind. You must go for understanding, you must engage and involve
yourself with the learning process. Your instructor will try to
motivate you and encourage your engagement. But realistically, the
instructor can only show and tell you about course material. Only
you can ensure that you are fully engaged in learning; this, the
most important part, is very personal and your deepest responsibility.
Think about your strategies for success now so you can get off to
a good start. We all wish you the very best.
